Sustainable Agriculture for a Better Future . . . .

Smallwood's Veggieporium is a family farm that dates back more than three hundred years. It was part of the land grant given Lord Fairfax by George III and was owned and operated by the Glass family until Louise Glass’s death in 1932. The Smallwood family has lived on the farm since 1924 when they moved there for more space for their growing family and to help Miss Lou run the farm. Cap Smallwood ran the farm and acted as Sheriff for Clarke County for 20 years and Deputy Sheriff for 18. The family purchased the farm in 1947.
Today we wish to keep the farm family owned and operated. To this end, with the invaluable help of our manager, Mike Burner, we have begun raising produce. We use all natural methods and never incorporate any synthetic, chemically based pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. We participate in a non-profit alternative certification program called Certified Naturally Grown. (for more information, see http://www.naturallygrown.org)

The produce you receive as farmers' market customers or CSA share holders is always locally grown and picked fresh daily. We feel this is a way to keep the farm going and to provide open, pastoral space not just for our family, but for Clarke County as a whole.
Please help us slow down the loss of farmland in Virginia (estimated at thousands of acres yearly) and do our small part to clean up the Shenandoah River, as we have an ever flowing stream on the farm that is a tributary of the Shenandoah.
